Queen Street Mall, Brisbane renaissance
On 19 August, ISPT lodged plans with Brisbane City Council for a significant redevelopment of 170 Queen Street.
ISPT is proposing to replace the existing Broadway on the Mall retail centre with a major reformatting of the retail footprint to include a retail flagship store, specialty retail shops and open plaza area.
The Development Application is the first step toward the delivery of an exciting new development that will allow for a flagship retail store over two levels with surrounding speciality retail.
ISPT’s General Manager Development Services, Chris McCluskey said “this latest development will help ensure that Queen Street Mall maintains its relevance by introducing new architecture to the city and keeping abreast of today’s international retail trends”.
Award winning architect John Wardle has designed the concept which creates a distinctive presence on Queen Street Mall while adding a dramatic, four level atrium inspired by traditional European arcades.
“The new design will add significantly to the character of the Queen Street Mall by opening the building to the public realm and activating the first and second levels,” Chris said.
“The design will both surprise and delight visitors to Brisbane’s retail core with its contemporary architecture and world class shopping amenity.”
The current Broadway on the Mall was constructed back in the 1980s and does not have a good interface with the mall. The Broadway centre will be closed from Saturday 31 August 2013, to allow for the start of the redevelopment.
